Gordon Bell head of Cumnock outlines the nature of CPD
----------
I think the expectations of the new staff are certainly my expectations of all staff. They've come into school with an expectation that their career is going to be in education and it's part of their job to have a full part in the development of courses within the school. Clearly, to support them to do that has an effect on CPD. I believe that they've come in well trained. The one-year probation period has been very beneficial, and they've come in as much more experienced staff to take up their first full-time appointment. It's really a matter of firstly identifying what further skills they need to develop to become more rounded teachers, and it varies dramatically from teacher to teacher. Some young staff starting in the school are absolutely fantastic and almost the complete article even at an early stage. For example, [in] one of my departments we moved from a situation that the department really wasn't going anywhere, mainly because a number of the staff were close to retrial age and their energy levels had dropped a bit. By bringing in trainee members of staff, both who had been through the probationary scheme, that department has been re-energised. The work that they're doing in re-energising the Principal Teacher as well has made a fantastic contribution to developments within the school.
