9. Coordinating CPD in School

CPD Policy and the School Development Plan

O'Brien, J. And MacBeath, J. (1999) Coordinating Staff Development: The Training And Development Of Staff Development Coordinators, Journal Of In-Service Education, 25(1) 69-83 describes the development by SiTC of a CDi for the then Scottish Office which was issued to schools at that time but the technology for accessing the CDi is now defunct. At the time of production staff development was the key phrase in use, to a certain extent this phrase has now been superseded by the term CPD - Continuing Professional Development.

We have now uploaded a pertinent selection of that material and video examples to a new website accessible through a link at the bottom of this page. We once again gratefully acknowledge the cooperation of all school staff who gave of their time in the making of the original CDi and indeed of other school colleagues who have provided illustrative materials for the National priorities website used in this i-paper.

The School Development Plan (SDP) will often identify high level needs but some more work may be required when developing specific INSET or CPD activities. Informal dialogue with colleagues can often inform a programme of CPD and may promote professional reflection. A balance has always to be struck when meeting individual, team or corporate needs and additionally prioritising of needs is deemed essential. Needs to be addressed should also reflect the needs of pupils in the particular school.
